Things Your Nanny should
Expect from You the Parent

Important Communication between Parents & Nanny

Whether your child is cared for in your home, by a family child care provider in their home, or in a child care center, your provider should be able to expect certain things of you.

1. Open communication: Please explain clearly and carefully your wishes and expectations about how your child will be cared for. Also provide updates on problems and progress that your child is making. Good communication helps us work together in the best interest of your child.

2. Agreement on terms or arrangements: You should fully understand the terms of the contract; the salary, vacation pay, holiday pay, days off and medical benefits that you and the nanny are agreeing to, and please ask if you’re not sure.

3. Honesty and trust: Although you need to be vigilant in order to safeguard your child, you should trust me as your nanny / provider, for I will always provide the best care possible for your child.  Asking questions when / if an apparent problem should arise, including being honest about how you / we believe the arrangement is working is very important.

4. Advance notice of and agreement to any changes: Nannies have to earn a living  too, so they deserve advance notice if you are going to stop using their services, take a vacation, or change your hours. If, for example, you want the nanny to start doing your child’s laundry, this request should be discussed and agreed to, and an adjustment should be made in the rate of pay. Also, if you expect a month or six weeks' notice in the event that your nanny can no longer care for your child, you owe her similar notice.

5. Being on time: As your nanny I have a personal life too and it’s important to me that I work regular scheduled hours, and am able to arrive and leave on time each day, as I also have a family at home waiting for me who need me :o)

6. Payment on time and NSF checks: Your nanny depends on being paid at the same time each week.  Please pay on time. If you pay by check and it becomes NSF you will be responsible for paying all late fees billed to your nanny’s bank account plus $5 per day from the pay date it was originally due.

7. Sick Children: Your nanny is able to provide reasonable sick care for your children, such as mild colds & coughs. However if they are extremely ill, such as high fever, vomiting or severe diarrhea, then you should plan on staying home with your children, so that your nanny doesn’t become ill and unable to care for your children, or infect her own family.

Please remember, I always have your children’s
best interests at heart and that’s a big job!!!
